Accounting in Sweden, explained for expats

Everything you need to know about running a business in Sweden as a foreigner.

Sweden has a well-organised tax system – but it assumes you already know the rules. Here's what every expat business owner needs to know.

Skatteverket – the Swedish Tax Agency

Skatteverket is responsible for income tax, VAT registration, and employer reporting. As a sole trader (enskild firma), you register directly with Skatteverket and file your own tax return. Most correspondence is in Swedish, but expatas handles all communication on your behalf.

F-skatt – what is it?

F-skatt (F-tax) is a tax approval that signals you are self-employed and responsible for paying your own taxes. Without it, your clients must withhold 30% from your invoices. We help you apply and maintain your F-skatt status.

VAT in Sweden

Sweden's standard VAT rate is 25%. If your annual revenue exceeds 80 000 SEK, you must register for VAT. VAT returns are filed quarterly or monthly. We handle registration and filing.
